Her journey exemplifies the power of dreams, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence.

Manu Bhaker, the dynamic shooter from Haryana, has rewritten the narrative of Indian women in the sport. At just 22 years old, her collection of accolades—a bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics, golds at the World Championships, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Youth Olympic Games—testifies to her extraordinary talent and determination. Her story is one of breaking barriers, overcoming challenges, and setting a new standard for excellence.
A Trailblazer at Paris 2024
Manu's performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics cemented her status as a trailblazer. Overcoming the heartbreak of a missed opportunity at Tokyo 2020 due to a pistol malfunction, she returned to the Olympic stage with renewed vigor. Her bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event was historic, marking the first time an Indian woman had secured a medal in Olympic shooting. It was also a testament to her perseverance and mental fortitude.
Her success didn't stop there. Partnering with Sarabjot Singh, she claimed another bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. This double victory made her the first athlete from independent India to win two medals at the same Olympics, further solidifying her legacy.

Early Life and the Road to Shooting

  • Manu's journey began in the village of Goria in Jhajjar district, Haryana, a state renowned for its sporting prowess, particularly in boxing and wrestling. However, Manu's initial interests lay in a diverse range of sports, including tennis, skating, boxing, and the Manipuri martial art 'thang ta'. She even earned medals at the national level in these disciplines, showcasing her natural athleticism and competitive spirit.
  • At the age of 14, Manu made a pivotal decision that would change the course of her life: she chose to focus on shooting. With the support of her father, who invested Rs. 1,50,000 in her training, she embarked on a path that would lead her to international glory.

A Meteoric Rise to Stardom

  • Manu's ascent in the shooting world was nothing short of phenomenal. In 2017, she won nine gold medals at the National Games in Kerala, even defeating the multiple World Cup medalist Heena Sidhu and breaking her record.
  • The following year, 2018, was a watershed moment for Manu. At the ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, she stunned the world by winning gold in the Women's 10-meter air pistol, defeating the two-time champion Alejandra Zavala.  She further cemented her dominance by winning another gold in the 10-meter Air Pistol mixed team event with Om Prakash Mitharval.
  • Her golden streak continued at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where she secured the top spot in the women's 10-meter air pistol event, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the process. At the Youth Olympics the same year, she once again clinched gold in the women's 10m air pistol event, becoming the first Indian shooter and the first female athlete from India to achieve this feat.

Overcoming Challenges and Redefining Success

  • Manu's journey hasn't been without its hurdles. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, delayed to 2021 due to the pandemic, presented a significant challenge. Technical issues, including a pistol malfunction, prevented her from reaching the finals in both the 10m and 25m air pistol events. Her performance in the mixed 10m air pistol team event also fell short of expectations.
  • However, true champions are defined not by their setbacks but by how they overcome them. Manu, with her unwavering determination, refused to be deterred. In 2023, she reunited with her coach Jaspal Rana, who had played a pivotal role in her earlier successes. Rana devised a rigorous training regimen, meticulously replicating Olympic match conditions to prepare Manu for the challenges ahead.
  • The results of this renewed focus and dedication were evident at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Manu's two bronze medals were not just a personal triumph; they were a symbol of resilience, hard work, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence.

A Role Model and Inspiration

  • Manu Bhaker's achievements extend beyond the shooting range. She is a role model for aspiring athletes, particularly young women in India, demonstrating that with passion, perseverance, and the right support, dreams can be transformed into reality.
  • Her success has also brought attention to the sport of shooting in India, inspiring a new generation of athletes to take up the sport. Her story serves as a reminder that even in a country traditionally dominated by cricket, there is room for other sports to flourish and produce world-class athletes.

Beyond the Shooting Range
Manu's interests and achievements extend beyond the world of sports. She is a graduate in Political Science from the prestigious Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi and is currently pursuing a Masters in Public Administration at Punjab University. This pursuit of higher education reflects her commitment to personal growth and her desire to make a positive impact on society beyond her sporting career.

Family: A Pillar of Support
Manu's family has been instrumental in her journey. Her father, Ram Kishan Bhaker, a chief engineer in the Merchant Navy, has been a constant source of encouragement and support. Her mother, Sumedha Bhaker, a school principal and a Sanskrit scholar, has instilled in Manu the values of discipline, hard work, and perseverance.
Manu's success is a testament to the power of a supportive family environment and the importance of nurturing talent from a young age.

The Road Ahead
At just 22, Manu Bhaker has already achieved what many athletes can only dream of. But her journey is far from over. With her unwavering determination, exceptional talent, and the guidance of her coach Jaspal Rana, she is poised to achieve even greater heights in the years to come.
The shooting world eagerly awaits her next move, and there is no doubt that she will continue to inspire and amaze with her performances on the international stage.
