AI and Flood Forecasting in India 🌊

Smart Water Resources Modelling Organisation (SWRMO-CoE): Established in September 2024 under the Central Water Commission (CWC) to lead smart water resource management initiatives.
AI/ML-based Models: SWRMO-CoE has internally developed AI/Machine Learning models for short-term flood forecasting at CWC's time series stations. This is a significant step towards modernizing flood prediction.
Budgetary Support: Funding for these AI models comes from the Water Resources Information System Plan, a scheme under the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation.
CWC's Flood Forecasting System 🌧️
Short-term Forecasting: CWC issues short-term flood forecasts with a lead time of up to 24 hours at designated locations. This is done to help state governments with reservoir regulation and other remedial actions.
Forecast Stations: CWC operates a network of 350 stations, including 150 inflow forecast stations and 200 level forecast stations. This network was established in consultation with state governments and project authorities.
7-Day Advanced Advisories: To provide more time for evacuation and planning, CWC has also developed basin-wise flood forecasting models based on rainfall-runoff mathematical modeling. These models provide 7-day advanced flood forecasting advisories.

Common Alert Protocol (CAP): Flood forecasting services are integrated with the CAP, an integrated alert dissemination platform, to issue alerts to State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs).
Digital Platforms: Information is also shared on various social media platforms like Facebook and X, as well as on the Flood Watch India mobile app.

CWC की बाढ़ पूर्वानुमान प्रणाली 🌧️
अल्पकालिक पूर्वानुमान: CWC नामित स्थानों पर 24 घंटे तक की अग्रिम चेतावनी के साथ अल्पकालिक बाढ़ पूर्वानुमान जारी करता है। यह राज्य सरकारों को जलाशय विनियमन और अन्य उपचारात्मक उपायों में मदद करने के लिए किया जाता है।
पूर्वानुमान स्टेशन: CWC 150 अंतर्वाह पूर्वानुमान स्टेशनों और 200 समतल पूर्वानुमान स्टेशनों सहित 350 स्टेशनों के नेटवर्क का संचालन करता है। यह नेटवर्क राज्य सरकारों और परियोजना प्राधिकरणों के परामर्श से स्थापित किया गया है।
