Under the Nuclear Energy Mission announced in the Union Budget 2025-26, a total budgetary allocation of ₹20,000 crore has been made for the research, design, development, and deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has initiated design and development work on indigenous SMRs. These include: 📌 The 220 MW Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-200) 📌 The 55 MW Small Modular Reactor (SMR-55) 📌 A High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor with a capacity of up to 5 MW(th), designed for hydrogen production.
The technology required for the installation of these reactors is available within the country. With the technical assistance of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, the manufacturing of most of the equipment falls within the capabilities of Indian industries. Consequently, Indian industries will be engaged in the manufacturing of this equipment.
